Right at Home in Thorneside

There's lots to do without even getting in your car when you stay at The Friendly Chat!

Thorneside is an old bayside suburb that suits people who enjoy walking, bird watching and refreshing Bay breezes. Numerous walkways and cycling paths wind through this leafy suburb leading you to the edge of Waterloo Bay, where migratory shorebirds abound.

Popular residents are scores of Black Swans who don’t mind having their picture taken.

Continue along the shoreline and you will discover Beth Boyd Park. Very popular at weekends, its picnic tables, electric BBQs and covered play area offer a shady space for relaxation and enjoyment for the whole family.

Opposite the park are two cafes – Unico Espresso and Blue Tongue – each having a character of its own, and offering different refreshments while you dine or play by the Bay. The William Taylor Sports Ground on Mooroondu Road offers facilities for cricket, tennis, soccer, netball,
petanque and a skate park.

As you amble around this leafy suburb, you can discover many peaceful spots for stopping a while in the shade and watching the world go by.

Hop in your car and you can be in Wellington Point Village in 5 minutes, where there is a wide variety of places to eat and drink in a tree-lined street. Continue through the village and head to Wellington Point Reserve with its old-world charm. This area caters for swimming, paddling, windsurfing, fishing, boating and the good old-fashioned picnics. If the tide is right, you can even walk to King Island.

Like to see more of the Bay? A 15-minute car ride and this area is at your fingertips with its historic charm scattered throughout. Wynnum foreshore is very popular with families enjoying its wading pool and water fun activities, shady trees and nearby fish and chip shops. Adjoining is Manly, a boatie's paradise with its large marina and waterside walkways, parks and restaurants. Lota offers a quieter space with a very large park and amazing play equipment surrounded by numerous picnic shelters and BBQs.

Want a day of sun, sea and adventure while you are staying at The Friendly Chat? Then head to Straddie! A favourite with us, this island offers so much. Natural beauty abounds with stunning beaches and native bushland - a very relaxed island feel. A short drive or train ride to Cleveland, this island can be easily reached by water taxi, and with the connecting bus link, you arrive at Point Lookout ready to explore the Gorge Walk. Along the way, you could be lucky enough to see turtles, dolphins, kangaroos, koalas and even whales if the season is right. Don’t forget to take some photos to record the stunning beauty.

Nearby Thorneside Rail Station gets you aboard air-conditioned trains that deliver you into Brisbane City in about 40 minutes. There you can enjoy strolling along Southbank beside the Brisbane River, maybe visiting the Museum or Art Gallery or enjoying the dining choices that await. Including a ride on the CityCat is a great way to view Brisbane as the river weaves around the CBD.
